Internet and Computer Use Policy
North Castle Public Library

The North Castle Public Library provides access to Internet resources equally to all Library patrons. 

Public Internet Access with Library Computers

In order to serve all patrons fairly, Library computer use is limited to a maximum of one (1) hour per day.  However, extensions of time in 30-minute increments may be given at the discretion of library staff.

North Castle Public Library Computer equipment and software must be used as installed.  Patrons are not permitted to add to, delete, or modify installed hardware or software on Library workstations.  Patrons may download or save items on their own computer or peripheral storage device.

Wireless Network

The North Castle Public Library provides access to the Internet via a wireless network (WiFi) for patrons to use with their own personal equipment and other mobile devices.  WiFi access provided by the Library is unsecured.  Anti-virus, security, and privacy protection are the responsibility of the patron. Patrons are responsible for having the proper hardware, software and network settings on their wireless device to connect to the Library provided WiFi.  Library staff does not provide wireless access support and will not install or modify hardware or software.

Security and Privacy

The North Castle Public Library will not release information on the use of specific Internet resources by members of the public except as required by law or as necessary for the proper operation of the Library.

Patrons are prohibited from making any attempt to gain unauthorized access to restricted files or networks, or to damage or modify Library owned devices or software, and will refrain from installing software on Library owned computers.  

North Castle Public Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from the use of electronic resources.

Compliance

Library computers and the wireless network may not be used to view, receive, or transmit obscene materials. Such conduct is disruptive to the operations of the Library and may have legal consequences.

Failure to comply with this policy, or misuse of the Library’s networks or equipment, including mobile devices connected to the Library’s WiFi, may result in the loss of computer access privileges and potential loss of Library privileges.

Any attempts to gain unauthorized access to restricted files or networks, to damage or modify Library owned devices or software, or to intentionally download or save items to Library owned devices may result in the loss of computer access privileges, potential loss of Library privileges, and if such activities are illegal, possible prosecution.

Westchester Library System

The Library is a member of, and obtains Internet services through, the Westchester Library System (“WLS”). Therefore, the Library also adheres to the WLS Internet Policy (https://www.westchesterlibraries.org/wp-content/files/wls-board/policies/WLS_Policy10_Internet_Safety_Apprvd20180529.pdf).
